Now Hiring: ML Engineer

Hi, I'm Mando.

I'm the Head of Engineering at Gradient Works. My email is mando@gradient.works (I promise that domain is legit) - if, at any point while you're reading this, you have any questions or concerns or feedback please send me an email.

We're looking for a ML engineer to join our small yet mighty engineering team. I know what you’re thinking: “what does this joker mean when they say ML engineer?” and that’s a reasonable question. Machine learning is a very broad discipline, so some of the kinds of work you’d be working on if you started today:

  • Designing/extending/maintaining a data storage architecture for a new RAG-based LLM application
  • Testing and building different document chunking algorithms
  • Optimizing the data retrieval pipeline for our existing LLM application
  • Adding in observability metrics so we can track and tune our data pipelines

So, as you can see, it’s got some data science and some data engineering in there, but with a heavy emphasis on using LLMs to answer questions and build products that we couldn’t have built a year ago.

To be clear, this is a step beyond “I shipped a chat agent (aka,I built a wrapper around OpenAI’s completions endpoint)”. We’re looking for someone who is excited by LLMs and the new doors they’ve opened and is most excited by building and shipping product. We’re a seed-stage company and we measure success by shipping products and features to our customers that help them be successful.

What We're Looking For

  • Production-quality LLM-based application development
  • Ability to write & review production-quality Python code
  • Experience using machine learning tools, libraries, and frameworks such as scikit-learn, pandas, numpy and others
  • Hands-on experience designing schemas for and using data stores (SQL databases like PostgreSQL, vector databases like ChromaDB)
  • Experience with designing, building, and managing custom data pipelines
  • Desire to work at a fast-growing pre-A startup

All this said, we don’t know exactly what the perfect candidate for this position looks like. If you've read this far and been nodding your head this whole time, send me an email. If you think "I don't know if I have the X necessary for this job but I wish I did (where X is ANYTHING)", send me an email. And ESPECIALLY if you come from a group that's not over-represented in tech, send me an email. We’re based in Austin, but are location agnostic and remote first.
